Displaced by their creations from their position as the apex species on the planet, humans no longer know steady employment. Regardless, they are agile and resilient, and without much else other than their natural gifts, they successfully adapt even to the most disheartening conditions. As machines and AI have effectively usurped all traditional labor positions, humans survive either in service to corporate masters, by completing task-based gigs that further enable the systems that will oust them, or by building criminal empires on the fringes of society. From this economy of the desperate, a new era of society is establishing itself.

If there were to be a single defining trait of mankind, it would be the unifying experience of existential concern that has haunted them since before words existed to describe the weight of the feeling. Humans have sought meaning, purpose, and reason through all available venues. First with personal stories regarding the soul, then with cosmic narratives featuring gods who designed them with intent, and finally by designing bespoke deities of electrons and steel to build a paradise on Earth. Little did they know that this paradise would be exclusive, and blessed were not the meek.

In spite of this, humans persist, and that is their greatest skill. They persist when they don’t know the outcome. They even persist when they do and it’s demonstrably stacked against them. Persistence is the human MO, and it’s the reflection of the organic cellular life that composes their bodies by the trillions. And if their God exists, it’s an expression of the divine soul housed within them. It is for this reason that, even if they aren’t the most intelligent or effective creatures in their solar system, they are certainly the most interesting.
